Mercury goes retrograde June 7 2014 and the traditional advice is “Don’t travel, Don’t sign contracts. Don’t marry. Don’t touch electrics!” But the whole Mercury retrograde cycle actually lasts eight weeks and happens three times, sometimes even four times in a year! That’s a long time to hide under the duvet and a real waste of a truly magical time. Mercury generally zips between two worlds, or rather, the two hemispheres of our brain. So during the retrograde period it feels like Mercury has gone down into the Underworld. In this realm closer to spirit we become more right-brain orientated. It is dark, so other senses are heightened. We will feel extra sensitive here, psychic even. Everything will seem hyper-real… you will notice things you had overlooked before. This will prompt you to re-evaluate, renovate, re-form, and re-invent. It’s true you might have to redo things, because Mercury will hit the same degree three times, but what this transit won’t let you do is to go into autopilot.

There are danger spots though. When Mercury is stationing retrograde we are at the wobbly stage where we are likely to slip-up, make mistakes, and misread anothers communications. But once we are over the threshold and into the Underworld, we can safely go about our business knowing we are in another realm. The same goes for when Mercury is stationing direct, just make sure you give your brain a few days to adjust back to solar thinking. The house in your natal chart that Mercury retrogrades in, will be your Underworld zone. There you will question everything. It will make you jittery about signing contracts, because you will be constantly thinking, “Is this what I really want?”. Before the retrograde, is a good time to finish off those Solar left-brain projects and gather information to bring down into your cave at its retrograde point. Then you can slow things down, let yourself be taken into other dimensions, try on different filters, experiment, shine a light on your demons, then recharge and reboot.

Mercury Retrograde June 2014

The Mercury retrograde chart on June 7 is quite slapdash and wayward in its geometry. Mercury itself is not a really big player… yet. Instead he is lurking below the action, drinking it all in, just watching. Venus the goddess of art and love is calling all the shots, slapping Lilith out of her dark melancholia and melting the armour of her lover Mars. Mercury in early Cancer decan 1 is the zone of persuading pirouettes, but with much less of rabid loyalty of the latter part of the decan. So it’s a dancing poodle with a bark much worst that its bite.

Mercury stations retrograde on Propus, the star of Castors foot, which is supposed to be highly fortunate and give a life of eminence. William Herschel discovered Uranus close to this star, so this is retrograde of discovery! This is a wild, untameable, free-spirited area of Cancer. We find activists here and the brave and fearless. Sometimes they are barking-mad too…When Mercury turns retrograde of course, things do seem a little barmy. I think since Venus is so strong, we can allow her to take over and let crazy artistic temperament reign supreme. This is a nice benign, retrograde with plenty of scope for artistic inspiration and flirting with ideas (and people!).

Out of the abstract expressionism of the Mercury retrograde chart, we can tease out a Yod to Saturn from an experimental Sun sextile Uranus. There are the remnants of a Uranus square Pluto to Mars T-square also but I don’t think we need to worry too much about that with the very capable Yod pointing to Saturn on Zubeneschemali, the fortunate north scale of Libra. “Cautious, reserved, studious, economical, analytical, good chemist or detective, good judge of human nature”  This Mercury journey is child’s play after the rollercoaster aspects that we have had, one after the other, since the start of the year. Not only that, Mercury will be even happier when he moves into tropical Gemini, the sign of its rulership. This zone between 3º Cancer and 24º Gemini contains the section of the ecliptic which falls between the horns of the Bull and the foot of Castor the mortal twin. Some native Indian tribes maintain that souls enter into existence though the area between constellations Taurus and Gemini. This area aligns perfectly (In longitude) with the Great Orion Nebula, which is positioned near the tip of the Hunters phallic belt sword. So this makes this zone super fertile and creative.

Mercury Retrograde Journey

When we get into Gemini decan 3 on June 17 Mercury suddenly swoons with power, as this is the mega successful zone of media Gods and business tycoons. I think this is a superb incubating period for grand ideas. From June 14 – 18 the Sun conjunct Mercury is combust. Demetra George says of this time “One might compare this stage to burning in the fiery cauldron of solar heat, where the last vestiges of the old self – in the case of Mercury, the old thought patterns and mental scripts that no longer serve us – are consumed and destroyed.” I think in this case it will be old ideas and plans that didn’t work out are thrown on to the scrap heap. June 19 is the day for drawing up new blueprints as Mercury conjunct the Sun is Cazimi (within 17’), Demetra George says this is a really opportune moment to set mental intentions. Mercury is reborn in the throne of the Sun, now working together with the all powerful commander, that is… red giant Betelgeuse!

Sun on Betelgeuse is influential, successful and has the confidence to pull through anything and with Mercury retrograde too it gives added creativity through writing, speech or singing. This can heat up a fertile mind or can equally forge a razor sharp or cutting wit. We could see a war with words in the media when Mercury goes back to being combust again. But while Mercury is still in Cazimi, it is a great time for wheeling and dealing since commerce is so well starred. June 25 Mercury will be out of the combustion cauldron and preparing to present itself to the world. July 1  Mercury is direct, maybe wait a few days for it to pick up speed again for the great knighting ceremony!

WE CAN BE HEROES..

Since Betelgeuse lies at the heart of our Mercury journey, I think the theme of this retrograde is about the process of evolving from the young naive prince to overblown tyrant to wise wizard. It is about the development of the sacred masculine within us all, whether we are male or female. We may have to go through a stage of beating our chests and being overtly hormonal. There may be a few artistic tantrums, but none that cause lasting resentments. Mercury generally makes harmonious aspects throughout the whole period, apart from cutting the umbilical cord to mummy moon when it turned retrograde. Mercury trines to the North Node are about setting out on the right path with a portfolio of ideas under your arm, which have been created during the retrograde phase.

We started Mercury retrograde with some scrappy plans, wild and untamed. By the end of it, we have organised those misbehaving strands into something coherent. The Mercury retrograde chart did look like a rough diamond, much like raw Betelgeuse. The Mercury direct chart contains a reassuring Mercury trine the North Node on brilliant Spica as part of a Minor grand trine to the Moon. The Sun is giggling down from Alhena in the cheeky twins while Venus is superbly charming on Aldebaran, a most chivalrous knight.  What a lovely happy ending. So folks, don’t get your knickers in a twist for this retrograde, for it will certainly be a picnic after everything that is passed. Think of it as a time where you can lock yourself away with a set of crayons and a book of fairytales as your therapy. You can play at having a relationship too, sending courtly love notes from afar until you are ready to blossom. It’s a time of childlike innocence and fun rehearsing for the serious reality that is to come when Mercury goes direct and all left-brained again. Enjoy the play-fighting while it lasts.
